Shawn,

Good to see you're using Antoine Predock's work as inspiration. I think the inspiration images you've posted are very powerful and your model has potential to evoke the same feelings as Predock's work, however the model is a bit bare and simplistic.

Predock has 'stuff' happening everywhere in his work, and by adding more elements to your model, you'll eventually reach the same level of evocation as Predock.

Cheers,

Jeff

Shawn,

I like that you are experimenting with openings that create a pattern when you look at the fixture and when you look at the surrounding walls. If you are NOT using texture maps in FormZ, you can set Display Options > Renderzone Options > Shadows > all Opaque; then the set each Light to have Soft Shadows (see the options) and you will get a more diffused pattern on the wall.

You could try out different kinds of openings on the shade by starting with a solid shade and then using Boolean Difference (for solids) or Trim & Stitch (for surfaces). The latter icon looks like a scissors. It might be interesting to have directional openings or fins that shape the light so that it looks different from different directions.

I would enjoy seeing you play with color more. How about if you try combining more than one color of light to make the renderings more complex? For example, you can add a soft cone light to light the face of the shade itself, as well as having the lamp inside the fixture. You can also give the interior light a Glow OR make a translucent material appear to Glow (Surface Styles > Reflection : Matte, Options > Glow. I learned from others that if you add just a touch of Glow to white materials, it is like bleach and gives you a strong white.

I look forward to seeing how you develop this.
